Jail delivery: An Innocent mrs Victoria Ebenyi discharged from prison custody alongside 25 others by Ebonyi state chief judge Alloy nwankwo









The chief judge of Ebonyi state has released 26 inmates from Abakaliki prison pursaunt  to powers conferred on him by criminal  justice (Release from custody) (special provisions) Act.
 The Act Empowers the Chief Justice and Chief Judges to order release of persons detained in certain cases
                (1) Where, in respect of any person detained in any prison in Nigeria, not being a person detained in execution of a sentence of a court or tribunal duly constituted by law, the Chief Justice of Nigeria or the Chief Judge of a State is satisfied that the-
                (a)          detention of that person is manifestly unlawful; or
                (b)          person detained has been in custody, whether on remand or otherwise, for a period longer than the maximum period of imprisonment which the person detained could  have served had he been convicted of the offence in respect of which he was detained.
 A total number of 16  inmates were discharged from the charges they were being detained for and 10 others were granted bail on some terms and conditions .
Some of the inmates released had stay up to five years in prison without formal trial in the court of law.

The most emotional part of the event was when mrs victoria Ebenyi was released permanently from prison custiody.
Mrs victoria Ebenyi was arrested and remanded in Abakaliki prison custody for Five months because of a crime of arson committed by her husband.

She was arrested and dumped at the prison custody by  the police because her husband who burnt down a house with 17 other persons could not be found.

  However ,justice prevailed when the chief judge of Ebonyi state Alloy nwankwo released her from prison custody alongside 25 others , when her case was called up during jail delivery that held yesterday in Abakaliki federal prison.
 The jail delivery is an event held from time to time  which  is aimed at decongesting the prisons.
